Saving Money And having FunI've asked many friends and colleagues to share ideas for date nights and family fun time that doesn't break the bank. Let's face it, dinner and a movie can run $75 or more for an average couple out on a Saturday night. So how do you have fun special times and stay on budget? Several people commented about going to the museums on the days or nights they are free. Most every major town has a week night or monthly night where the museums are free to the public. I did a quick search on the web for Dallas museums free and found listings of the dates and times when several local musuems are free. So make a date night during the week and enjoy a bit of culture for free. One museum even has a night under the stars during summer where the symphony music is free. Take your date or the entire family out for a night of music free. While I was talking with one friend, she reminded me that several art districts in the city have special nights with music, appetizers, and drinks for patrons. Just remember to leave the checkbook and debit card at home. You don't want to be tempted to purchase any art, so if you can't resist then this one is not for you. Stick with the museums instead. Otherwise, enjoy the event while taking in many local contemporary artists. Additionally, check your newspaper listings, or go online for community events, and find a local arts and craft show for a great Sat or Sun afternoon out. Again, remember to leave the checkbook and debit card at home. Any only go if you can resist the temptation to purchase. For those who love movies and dinner, my friends suggest matinees where the cost is substantially less. One colleague even suggest you eat lunch at home before going to resist the need for snacks. Some citiies even have what are known as dollar theaters. These are a great way to see hit movies with the whole family. Just remember the snacks are full price, so don't go in hungry or you risk blowing the budget. For those who love the outdoors, hiking, running, cycling, and picnicing were all mentioned. Each of these activies is great fun for all and free. One friend mentioned taking the family fishing at a local fishing hole or a state park for about $5. The kids will love it and you can make a whole day of family time. Finally, one that I'm going to try myself is game or card night. it was suggested that you get friends together and do a potluck on the drinks and snacks. The competiveness comes out in everyone making the night great fun. Conversation abounds as does laughter. The point of all of this? There are so many things we can do for little or no cost. So for singles or couples, a liitle research and creativity can make date nights very affordable. For families, there's plenty of fun just waiting in the great outdoors or in a game night. Whatever you choose, have fun and stay on budget! |
